You may have seen in the news over the weekend, Kaseya had a massive ransomware attack which has affected thousands of small and medium-sized businesses. Cybersecurity industry experts believe that a Russia-linked organised crime group is behind the attack.
The attack targeted a Florida-based IT company, Kaseya, before using its VSA software to launch the attack against thousands of businesses. Many IT managed services providers use the Kaseya VSA software to control their customers' IT systems.
At present, there are only estimates of the devastation, but security analysts suggest that as many as 10,000 businesses worldwide may be affected.
During a ransomware attack, a cyber criminal encrypts your files. This prevents you from being able to access to these file, unless the victim pays a ransom to the attacker. They can leave organisations unable to operate for extended periods of time, leading to devastating consequences.
No. Superfast IT does not use the Kaseya VMS platform and has not been affected by this attack. Still, it highlights that all our businesses are vulnerable and need to improve our security posture.
We have been raising awareness about cybersecurity and the changing threat landscape for a long time. I want you to know we take security extremely seriously and utilise security controls to prevent an attack like this from happening. We have also been working hard to further develop specialist cybersecurity skills within our team and enhance third-party verification of our processes.
Our work with the West Midlands Cyber Resilience Centre highlights how we are also working with Government bodies to ensure we are keeping up to date with the latest advances.
As there is no immediate risk to you - no remedial work is required. Instead, we recommend our clients to schedule a risk conversation to decide on what course of action, if any, you need to employ. Schedule time with me directly using the link below.
Bear in mind that every small business, worldwide, is a target for cybercrime. Quite often, when I talk to our clients, I hear, "it won't happen to us, we're too small." You must understand that many attacks are random and automated, and there is every chance cybercriminals will attack your business.
Ransomware organisations are only after money. Most businesses will pay thousands of pounds to retrieve access to their computer systems, so it's easier and cheaper to put preventative measures in place.
Fairly recently, we launched an Enhanced Security Package. Businesses employing these measures will have significantly increased protection against ransomware attacks, such as the Kaseya attack.
You can vastly improve your cybersecurity posture by opting into our Enhanced Security Package, which has specific solutions for tackling ransomware.
The video below helps to explain what has happened in the Kaseya attack in layman terms and your supply chain security risks .
